Information reaching Richghanaonline.com from a reliable source said Papavi, as the leader was popularly known, died on Saturday, October 16 at the Keta Government Hospital.
The 88-year-old had been leading an insurgency, demanding the secession of the erstwhile Western Togoland, which covers modern day Oti and Volta regions as well as some parts of the North-East Region, from Ghana.

The octogenarian had been standing trial for treason but recently called the bluff of the Attorney General.
He was re-arrested in July after several months of hiding.
‘President’ Papavi and eight others were first arrested in May 2019 after they claimed time was due, per an agreement with the government of Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, to declare their independence from Ghana.
They were flown to Accra to face charges of treason, among others.
However, the state later dropped the charges against him.
But an insurgency on Friday, September 25, 2020, which saw roadblocks to the Volta Region and attacks on government installations, led to their re-arrests.
