The original Illuminati were a Bavarian secret society founded in 1776. Their stated goals were, to coin a phrase, “woke”—to eliminate superstition, religious influence over public life, and the abuse of power by the state and the wealthy. Naturally, they were banned almost immediately, and the Catholic Church hated them. Also naturally, they attracted a lot of intellectuals and artists, like Goethe. You might notice that their stated goals are the exact opposite of what is claimed for them now, and they would have thrown anyone who believed in magic out the door.
The current “Illuminati” are not a group, they are individual fraudsters, charlatans, scammers and fakes who claim to give you magic powers that will bring you money, fame and influence. What they actually do is drain you dry of every penny they can, and then vanish when they can’t extract anything more from you.
