HONORABLE LAWYER EMELIA ANKOMAH WRITES:
Today in Parliament, as we commemorated International Women’s Day, I had the privilege of making my first contribution on the floor—a moment that fills me with gratitude and a renewed sense of responsibility to advocate for women’s inclusion in politics and leadership.
In my speech, I passionately called for greater support, encouragement, and motivation for women in politics. The reality is that many capable and intelligent women shy away from leadership roles due to the negative societal attitudes, stereotypes, and challenges they face. It is time to change this narrative. We must create an enabling environment where women feel empowered to participate fully in decision-making processes.

One major concern I raised was the use of unprintable words and derogatory remarks against women in politics. Such language is not only disrespectful but also serves as a major deterrent for women who aspire to lead. We cannot allow this to continue if we truly want an inclusive and progressive political landscape. Respect, dignity, and support should be the foundation of our politics—not insults and intimidation.
To the many women who dream of entering into political leadership but are held back by fear, I say this: Do not be discouraged. Look at the women who have taken bold steps and are making a difference. Let their stories inspire you to rise, to lead, and to make an impact. There is space for all of us at the table, and together, we can build a Ghana where women’s voices are heard and valued in governance.

Women’s participation in politics is not just about representation; it is about harnessing the full potential of our nation by ensuring that every voice, every talent, and every perspective is included in our development process.
As we celebrate this day, let us recommit ourselves to supporting one another, breaking barriers, and ensuring that no woman is left behind in the pursuit of leadership and excellence. When women rise, Ghana rises!
