The Ghana Government has made a significant breakthrough in the education sector by clearing all outstanding Capitation Grant arrears owed to basic schools nationwide, covering the period from 2023 to date.
This crucial development is aimed at bolstering the financial stability of public schools, enabling them to provide quality education to students without interruptions.
According to the Ghana Education Service (GES), the payment of these arrears underscores the government’s commitment to supporting basic education. The Capitation Grant plays a vital role in facilitating the smooth operation of public basic schools, providing essential funding for teaching and learning materials, minor repairs, and other critical school management activities.
“By disbursing these funds, the government empowers headteachers to deliver quality education with greater autonomy and accountability.”
The GES has expressed profound appreciation to the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance for prioritizing the payment of the Capitation Grant despite the prevailing economic challenges. Furthermore, the Service commended heads of basic schools for their patience and dedication in maintaining uninterrupted teaching and learning during the delay.
“We urge all school leaders to use the funds responsibly and in line with the guidelines for the utilisation of the Capitation Grant,” the GES statement emphasized. To ensure accountability and value for money, monitoring teams at the district and regional levels will intensify supervision.
Reaffirming its commitment to improving educational outcomes, the GES pledged to continue collaborating with stakeholders to enhance school management systems, improve learning outcomes, and guarantee inclusive, equitable, and quality education for every Ghanaian child.
“This payment reflects government’s strong resolve and practical support towards the smooth operation and effective management of basic education across the country,” the statement noted.
“With the clearance of these arrears, the government aims to create a more conducive environment for students to thrive academically, ultimately investing in the nation’s future.”
The clearance of Capitation Grant arrears is a significant step towards ensuring that public basic schools can function effectively, providing students with the quality education they deserve. The government’s commitment to supporting education is evident in this development, and it is expected to have a positive impact on the education sector as a whole.
