In a heartfelt address on the floor of Parliament today, actor-turned-lawmaker Hon. John Dumelo took time to recognise and appreciate the contribution of Ghana’s farmers to the national economy. His remarks come on the eve of National Farmers’ Day, which is being observed this year on Friday, 5 December.

Standing before his colleagues, Hon. Dumelo praised the “tireless and often unsung efforts” of the men and women working on farms and in fisheries across Ghana. He stressed that their labour underpins national food security, rural livelihoods, and overall economic stability. As he put it, “On the floor of Parliament today, I commended the efforts of farmers as we celebrate National Farmers’ Day tomorrow. Their contribution to the nation is worth celebrating. We appreciate you!!!”

The 2025 edition of National Farmers’ Day — the 41st since the holiday was established — will be officially celebrated under the theme “Feed Ghana, Eat Ghana, Secure the Future.”  The government, through the Ministry of the Interior, has declared 5 December a statutory public holiday nationwide, signalling the importance of the event and the value placed on farmers and fishers by the state.

In addition to national recognition and celebrations, this year’s festivities will be anchored in the capital of the Volta Region, Ho, where a grand durbar and awards ceremony are planned.  It is expected that stakeholders across the agricultural value chain — from small-scale producers to agribusiness partners — will participate in honouring outstanding contributions to Ghana’s food systems.

Hon. Dumelo’s tribute echoed a sentiment increasingly voiced by lawmakers in Parliament, recognising agriculture as a backbone of the Ghanaian economy. As noted in a separate parliamentary business statement today, the House itself lauded farmers nationwide as the nation prepares for Farmers’ Day observances on Friday.

With his remarks, John Dumelo extends a message of thanks and solidarity to Ghana’s farmers — acknowledging that their hard work and resilience feed the nation, support livelihoods and sustain growth.
