The Denkyira enclave has no shortage of musical talent, but according to Ghanaian musician Kobby Oxy, the biggest challenge confronting many young artistes from the area is not talent, it is the lack of the support, exposure and opportunities needed to take their careers to the next level.
For years, Denkyira has produced promising musicians with the creativity, passion and determination to compete on the national stage. From emerging singers and rappers to producers and songwriters, the region continues to demonstrate that musical talent is deeply rooted in the community.
However, despite their hard work and dedication, many of these artistes struggle to break through beyond their immediate communities.
Kobby Oxy believes that almost every musician emerging from Denkyira possesses something special, but talent alone is rarely enough to become a household name in Ghana’s highly competitive music industry.
According to him, young artistes need people and institutions willing to invest in their dreams through promotion, management, quality music production, media exposure, collaborations, events and other professional opportunities.
“Every artist in Denkyira is talented. The problem is that irrespective of their hard work, many of them cannot reach the top because they don’t get the support they need.”
The situation has left several promising musicians building strong careers within their local communities while remaining relatively unknown to the wider Ghanaian audience.
One major issue facing emerging artistes across Ghana is the concentration of the music industry’s biggest opportunities in Accra and a few other major cities.
For a young musician based in the Denkyira enclave, gaining access to influential producers, radio personalities, event organisers, entertainment executives, bloggers and established artistes can be extremely difficult.
This creates a situation where an artiste may release good music consistently but struggle to receive the visibility required to attract a national audience.
Denkyira musicians therefore need stronger connections between the local entertainment ecosystem and the national music industry.
Supporting Denkyira musicians should not be the responsibility of the artistes alone.
Traditional leaders, business owners, politicians, media houses, event organisers, entertainment stakeholders and ordinary residents all have a role to play in creating an environment where young talents can flourish.
Local businesses could sponsor music events and emerging artistes. Media platforms could dedicate more airtime and digital space to local music. Event organisers could create platforms for Denkyira artistes to perform alongside established stars, while successful musicians and industry professionals could mentor upcoming talents.
Even something as simple as streaming, sharing and promoting an artiste’s work can contribute to building their audience.
Kobby Oxy’s call is ultimately bigger than his own career. It is a call for the Denkyira community to recognise music as an industry capable of creating employment, promoting the area’s identity and giving young people a platform to build successful careers.
The enclave has talented musicians. What is needed now is a major push to transform that talent into national recognition.
With the right investment, strategic promotion, professional management and consistent support, Denkyira can produce musicians capable of competing with the biggest names in Ghanaian music.
The message is therefore clear: Denkyira has the talent. What the musicians need is the opportunity.
If the community comes together to support its young artistes today, some of the next major Ghanaian music superstars could emerge from the Denkyira soil tomorrow.
