His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana, has commissioned the new 260-capacity Inmates Skills Acquisition and Reformation Centre at the Damongo Camp Prison, located in the Savannah Region.
The facility, constructed by The Church of Pentecost and handed over to the Ghana Prisons Service, is the third of its kind built by the church. According to the leadership, the project aims to help reduce prison overcrowding and promote the effective rehabilitation of inmates through vocational and skills training.
However, the initiative has sparked mixed reactions among members and youth of the church, some of whom have voiced frustration over what they perceive as a misplacement of priorities. They argue that the church should direct more resources toward supporting struggling members, the poor, and vulnerable communities, rather than focusing on prison projects.
“We believe the church’s first responsibility should be to uplift the poor and needy among us,” one youth member expressed on social media. “While the prison project may have good intentions, many members are suffering without adequate support from the church.”
Church leaders, however, have defended the initiative, emphasizing its humanitarian goal of transforming lives and reducing societal stigma against ex-convicts. They maintain that the project aligns with the church’s broader mission of national development and social responsibility.
As the debate continues, many observers believe the conversation underscores the growing need for faith-based organizations to strike a balance between charitable outreach within the church and social interventions that serve the wider public.
