If you earn between GH₵2,500 and GH₵5,000 a month, I want to have an honest conversation with you—not just about your income, but about the stage of life you are in, what is working, what is not, and what needs to change.
You are not poor, but you may not be financially free either. You are in the middle, and the middle is where many people get stuck for years without realising it.
At this stage, money can easily pass through your hands without leaving anything meaningful behind. So, you must become intentional.
First, stabilise your life.Keep rent, food, transportation and basic bills under control. If your rent is consuming several months of your income, you may be living beyond your means. Reduce unnecessary pressure. At this stage, peace of mind is wealth.
Second, avoid lifestyle traps. This is not the time to compete with anyone. Be careful with impulsive spending, expensive fashion, excessive partying, unnecessary upgrades and buying everything you see online. You do not need to look rich. Discipline today can determine your financial position tomorrow.
Third, make saving automatic.Treat saving like a bill. When your income arrives, move a portion away immediately. Whether it is 10%, 20% or 30%, start with what you can realistically maintain. Consistency matters more than the amount.
But don’t stop at saving. Build assets.Learn about legitimate investment options such as mutual funds, treasury bills, index funds, regulated investment products, land contributions or a side business you understand. Start small. The habit of consistently putting money to work matters.
Most importantly, increase your earning power.Saving alone will not take you far if your income never grows. Learn new skills, take courses, attend training and improve your professional value. Whether it is technology, data, cybersecurity, marketing, design, sales, finance or another valuable skill, become better at something people are willing to pay for.
Build your network.Spend time with people who are focused on growth, learning and building. Create genuine professional relationships. One good connection can sometimes open a door that years of effort alone could not.
Protect your health. Eat better, exercise, sleep properly and take your health seriously. Your ability to build wealth depends on your ability to function well.
Help your family, but set boundaries.Support people when you can, but do not destroy your future trying to rescue everyone. You cannot save others by drowning yourself.
And finally, stop comparing your timeline with someone else’s. Someone may be earning GH₵15,000 at 27 while you are earning GH₵3,000. That does not mean you have failed. Life is not a race. Focus on direction, not speed.
Your current income is not your identity, and it does not have to be your final destination.
If you stay disciplined, keep learning, increase your earning power, build assets and avoid lifestyle traps, this income level can become a phase—not a permanent position.
Build quietly. Build intentionally. Build consistently. Your future self will thank you.
