Gov’t Announces Expansion of Free Senior High School Policy to Private Schools Next Academic Year

NDC government under the leadership of President John Dramami mahama has unveiled plans to extend the Free Senior High School (FSHS) program to private institutions, effective next academic year.

This groundbreaking move aims to enhance capacity and gradually phase out the double-track system, thereby revolutionizing the country’s education landscape.

Deputy Minister of Education, Dr. Clement Appak, disclosed this information during a press briefing on Tuesday, May 27, alongside the release of revised guidelines for the upcoming Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) school selection process. Notably, candidates will now be permitted to select seven schools, up from the previous limit of six, in a bid to enhance student placement prospects.

Dr. Appak emphasized that the inclusion of private schools in the FSHS policy is a fulfillment of the NDC’s campaign promise, which has been diligently pursued through extensive meetings and engagements with stakeholders.

“As part of our campaign promise, we have been working assiduously to bring on board private senior high schools in the delivery of the Free SHS programme,” he stated.

“We believe strongly that in fulfilling this manifesto commitment, this will serve as a vital artery in helping us bring an end to the double-track system,” Dr. Appak added, underscoring the government’s determination to transform the education sector.

This policy expansion is set to have a profound impact on Ghana’s education system, increasing access to quality senior high school education for a broader range of students.
